Vol. 456 No. 7

Written Answers. - Animal Field Sports.

Ivor Callely

Question:

51 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry his views on animal field sports activities; if his attention has been drawn to any suffering caused to animals; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14419/95]

Properly regulated field sports pursued in this country are part of the traditional fabric of rural life and have the support of a broad cross-section of people in rural communities. The welfare of the animals and the prevention of any unnecessary suffering and cruelty are an important factor and these aspects have given rise to some concern in recent years. As a result certain safeguards have been applied to hare coursing and I am at present examining issues related to fox hunting. Furthermore, the fine for cruelty under the Protection of Animals Acts, 1911 and 1965, has been increased to £1,000.
