Vol. S No. 6

ESTIMATE FOR DEPARTMENT OF IRISH

MINISTER FOR IRISH

said he had nothing to add to what was in his report. The amount was £8,800.

asked how was it possible to spend £8,800 in this Department last half-year. He was not satisfied that full value was got specially as another organisation existed which did the same work or went on parallel lines, the Gaelic League.

, said there must be some mistake with regard to the amount spent by his Department. There was £10,000 voted for the year and £2,000 voted for literature, which was roughly £6,000 for the half-year. Amount expended for the half-year was £2,800. If the Department was to be carried into a Department of Education they would want more. They would want several commissions of inquiry into education in Ireland. He considered such commissions of vital importance.

said he got no reply to his query as to what the £8,800 for the current half-year was to be spent on.

replied that there were competitions for primary and intermediate schools that properly come into the first half-year and which could not be paid as the competitions were not over and therefore expenditure which should have come in the first half-year was to be carried into the second half-year.

said she hoped something would be done towards getting out a really competent Irish grammar.
