Members of the Oireachtas are paid a basic salary plus a salaried allowance based on any additional positions they hold. They can also claim the Parliamentary Standard Allowance and other allowances. Full details of these salaries and allowances are available to the public here.
Salaries
Members of the Oireachtas are paid a basic salary and may also receive a salaried allowance. Members’ basic salaries and salaried allowances are subject to tax, PRSI, USC, pension levy and pension contributions.
Scheme for secretarial assistance
TDs, Senators and political parties directly employ their own administrative staff, but these staff are paid by the Houses of the Oireachtas Commission.
Parliamentary Standard Allowance
The Parliamentary Standard Allowance is an annual allowance which comprises the travel and accommodation allowance (TAA) and the public representation allowance (PRA).
Other allowances
Members of the Dáil can claim a once-off allowance towards the cost of setting up a constituency office. Oireachtas Members can also be reimbursed for the cost of a mobile phone.
