Vol. 6 No. 13

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - FLOODING OF AWBEG RIVER (CHARLEVILLE).

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is aware of the grave loss and inconvenience caused to land-holders by the flooding of the river Awbeg, Charleville, for a considerable portion of each year, and whether he is prepared to have the surveys and report made some years ago by the Inspectors of the Board of Works re-examined and steps taken to remove the silt which has lodged in the river in recent years, and to reconstruct the weir sluices, and also if he is aware that for this purpose local land-holders are prepared to submit plans and maps of previous proposals which are in their possession.

I must refer the Deputy to the answer which I gave yesterday in reply to a similar question regarding the flooding of the River Blackwater.

The same conditions exist in regard to the undertaking of drainage works on the Awbeg as on the Blackwater. The question is being considered of introducing legislation providing new machinery for performing the functions which at present fall to Drainage Boards.

The question is not exactly as I handed it in. It refers to the flooding of the river Awbeg, Charleville. The question as I handed it in referred to the flooding of land mainly in the vicinity of Buttevant.
