Vol. 8 No. 8

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - CO. COUNCIL'S SECRETARY'S PENSION.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he is aware that the County Council of the County Donegal fixed a pension of £900 per year for their late Secretary, Mr. Bernard McFadden; if it is intended to sanction this amount, having regard to the present taxation and prevailing distress throughout the county, and to the fact that Mr. McFadden has been in receipt of salary and emoluments amounting to practically £2,000 for several years prior to his retirement.

The answer to the first part of the question is in the affirmative. Sanction has not been accorded to the pension. The matter is at present the subject of correspondence with the County Council.

Arising out of that answer, is the Minister aware that the County Council, in fixing this provisional pension, acted on the lines of maximum economy available to them, and that since they did that a document has turned up in the Local Government offices in the shape of a return made some time ago by the late Secretary of the County Council which will enable a substantial reduction to be made in the amount of this pension?

The Minister is aware of the facts referred to by the Deputy.
