Vol. 10 No. 8

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - HAULBOWLINE DOCKYARD.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that during the refitting of trawlers for foreign purchasers in Haulbowline Dockyard from October to December, 1924, the hours the staff worked were from 7.15 a.m. to 10.30 p.m., a period of fourteen and a-half hours, reckoned as seventeen hours for purposes of pay and overtime pay, and whether he will take steps to ensure that in future such excessive hours are not worked, and that any extra work required will be dealt with by the employment of some of the tradesmen at present unemployed locally.

During the refitting of trawlers sold for foreign destinations at Haulbowline Dockyard between October and December, 1924, a certain amount of overtime was worked, as the purchasers were anxious to have the work completed quickly. The exact amount worked cannot be stated without reference to Haulbowline, but it was not excessive, and was less than that suggested by the Deputy in the question. Instructions were given in December that in future no overtime is to be worked at the Dockyard without special authority.
