Vol. 13 No. 8

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - BALLINASLOE WORKHOUSE BUILDINGS.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will state if the Workhouse Buildings at Ballinasloe, recently vacated by National troops, are in a dilapidated condition; if such dilapidation occurred during its occupation by these troops; whether any repairs have been done during the years it was so occupied, and if it is the intention of the Executive Council to pay rent for the time, or to restore the buildings to the state of repair in which they found them, and not to leave this expense on the ratepayers of County Galway.

I am aware that the workhouse buildings at Ballinasloe are in a dilapidated condition. It appears that very little repair work was done during military occupation, but I regret that I have no report showing to what extent the dilapidation was caused by troops. I understand that the buildings are vested in the Minister for Local Government and Public Health and am therefore not clear that any question of rent arises. As regards re-conditioning the premises, I am having the matter considered and shall communicate with the Deputy as soon as possible.
