Vol. 20 No. 6

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - PROTECTING WILD BIRDS.

asked the President if he will introduce proposals for legislation to protect wild birds.

The Deputy is no doubt aware that a Bill for the protection of wild birds introduced in the Seanad was rejected in the late Dáil by a substantial majority. I have no reason to believe that the present Dáil would take a different view and I do not propose to introduce another measure, at present.

Will the President give the new Dáil an opportunity of doing what is right in connection with this matter by introducing a new Bill, or will he give time to private Deputies to do so?

If there is an opinion held that this House will take a different view, it will be open to any member who so thinks to introduce the Bill which was rejected here a couple of months ago.

Would the President consider the advisability of calling together a vocational council or a committee to discuss this matter? It is really of importance. Some of us opposed the Bill on a previous occasion because it did not get any due consideration.

Would it be possible to bring forward again in the Dáil the Bill that was rejected, in order to take the view of this House upon it?

It would be in order to do so.

It would be possible. I think many of those subjects that are being raised now could be just as suitably raised in November when, perhaps, the great strain from which Ministers and members are suffering will have passed off.
