Vol. 21 No. 9

PRIVATE NOTICE QUESTION. - THREATENED STRIKE ON G.S. RAILWAYS.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he has any statement to make regarding the threatened strike on the Great Southern Railways and whether he has taken or proposes to take any steps to prevent the dispute developing.

The point at issue being, according to the statements of both parties, merely one of procedure I do not anticipate that a strike will occur. I have notified each party that before causing any such public inconvenience I expect them to communicate with me when I will arrange a joint conference.

Is the Minister aware that the steps which the railway company propose to take are a direct violation of the regulations laid down in the negotiation machinery as agreed upon between the trade unions and the companies and, in the event of a strike taking place, would Deputy Good——

If I am going to call a joint conference, I should not be asked to answer questions of that type.

If the Minister calls a joint conference will he ask Deputy Good to attend?

You had better keep Deputy Cassidy away.
