Vol. 28 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Meath Lands—Objection to Acquisition.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries whether he will state what were the objections by the owner to the acquisition by the Land Commission of the lands of Galleastown and Ballynamona, near Oldcastle, Co. Meath; if these objections have been adjudicated upon, and what was the result.

Proceedings were instituted under the provisions of the Land Act, 1923, for the acquisition of the following lands on this estate, viz.:—

These lands were published in a provisional list of lands which, if not excluded in consequence of a valid objection, would become vested in the Land Commission on the Appointed Day. The owners objected to the acquisition of the lands of Galleastown and Ballynamona on the grounds that they were farmed in conjunction with the lands of Crossdrum, which has been in occupation of the Rotherham family for upwards of a century, and that the latter lands could not be profitably worked without them. This objection was heard in the Court of the Irish Land Commission and disallowed.

The owner appealed to the Judicial Commissioner, who reversed the decision of the Land Commission by excluding the lands of Galleastown and Ballynamona from the proceedings. Proceedings for the acquisition of the lands of Knocklough and Newtown are being continued by the Land Commission, and an offer is now about to issue for these lands.
