Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sunday Telegraph and Telephone Facilities.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will state (a) the areas in the Saorstát where the telephone can be used on Sundays and the hours during which it is available; (b) the areas in the Saorstát where a telegram can be sent on Sundays, and the hours during which this privilege can be exercised; and if he will state whether the regulations for public holidays are similar to Sundays in both the services referred to.

A continuous service is afforded to subscribers at the following exchanges (82):—

Adare, An Uaimh, Athlone, Blarney, Ballsbridge, Bishopstown, Blackrock (Cork), Blackrock (Dublin), Bray, Buncrana, Bandon, Carrick-on-Suir, Castleknock, Castletroy, Ceanannus Mor, Celbridge, Clara, Clondalkin, Clones, Clonsilla, Clontarf, Cobh, Coolock, Cork, Crosshaven, Curragh Camp, Dalkey, Donabate, Douglas, Drogheda, Droichead Nua, Drumcondra, Dublin, Dunboyne, Dundalk, Dundrum, Dungarvan, Dun Laoghaire, Enniscorthy, Fahan, Foxrock, Finglas, Glanmire, Galway, Greystones, Howth, Kildare, Kilkenny, Killaloe, Killarney, Killiney, Leixlip, Letterkenny, Limerick, Listowel, Longford, Lucan, Maynooth, Midleton, Monaghan, Monkstown (Cork), Mullingar, Naas, New Ross, Passage West, Port Laoighise, Portlaw, Portmarnock, Rathfarnham, Rathluire, Rathmines, Salthill (Galway), Shankhill, Sligo, Sutton, Thurles, Tralee, Tramore, Waterford, Wexford, Wicklow, Youghal.

The telephone service is available on Sundays, in all other places where it is established, form 9 a.m. to 10.30 a.m.

In a few other cases a Sunday service extending beyond the period 9 a.m. to 10.30 a.m.—but not continuous—is afforded to subscribers. The additional hours of service in those cases are:—

Ballincollig, 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.; Carlow, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.; Cavan, 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.; Clonmel, 10.30 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Ennis, 10.30 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Malahide, midnight Saturday to 9 a.m., 10.30 a.m. to 11 a.m., 9 p.m. to midnight.

The telegraph service on Sundays is available at all telegraph offices during the period 9 a.m. to 10.30 a.m., but at Dublin, Cork and Cobh a continuous service is afforded.

The hours of service at telegraph and telephone offices on Bank Holidays, Christmas Day and Good Friday are similar to those on Sundays.
