Vol. 37 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Acquisition of Limerick Lands.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries whether he will state if the Land Commission are taking any steps to acquire the lands of Major Roche Kelly at Rockstown, Fedamore, Co. Limerick, for distribution.

The Land Commission have had inquiry made regarding the lands of Major Roche Kelly at Rockstown, and do not propose to acquire them.

Mr. Crowley

Would the Parliamentary Secretary state if he has received representations from the local Land Settlement Committee asking the Land Commission to acquire the estate?

Mr. Crowley

Will the Parliamentary Secretary state, in view of the fact that Fedamore is one of the few congested areas of Limerick, why he does not propose to acquire this estate?

This estate comprises only a very small area of land—I think about 113 acres. It is the only land the owner has which is suitable for finishing cattle. The Land Commission have already acquired 500 acres of land from the owner, and I think the Deputy will agree that in the circumstances 113 acres is not an unreasonably large amount of land to leave with him.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that it was stated three or four years ago that these lands would be acquired at some future date for the uneconomic holders in the area? Further is he aware that the lands were in the hands of Mr. William B. Fitt, Auctioneer, for sale about a fortnight ago and that no purchaser could be got for them? What does he propose to do in these circumstances?
