I am informed by the Board of Works that during the financial year ended 31st March, 1931, the quantity of coal supplied out of public funds to Gárda Síochána barracks in the Dublin metropolitan area and to the Depot was 1,780 tons, the cost of which was £2,781 5s. 6d. Of this quantity 59 tons was Saorstát coal, the cost of which was £130 13s. 6d. In addition 160 tons of Dublin-made coke, costing £248 8s. and 4 tons of foreign anthracite beans, costing £8 16s. were supplied in that area.

No coal is supplied directly to barracks outside the Dublin metropolitan area. In these cases an annual allowance in cash is made to the station units to meet the cost of fuel and light. The allowance varies according to the number of public rooms in the barracks.

The quantity of coal supplied to military barracks and Army offices during the financial year 1930-31 was 9,806½ tons, costing £15,575.

In addition to the above, about six tons of Saorstát anthracite coal, at a cost of approximately £13 13s. 0d., was supplied for the purpose of ascertaining to what extent this coal could be used, either alone or mixed with foreign coal in military barracks and posts.
