Vol. 43 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Drainage of Moving Bog Near Rathmore.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries whether in view of the sad occurrence some years ago when the moving bog at Gneeveguilla, Rathmore, Kerry, moved, destroying a family and damaging property and land for many square miles, he will make provision to drain the Annaghbeg Bog, Gneeveguilla, Rathmore, which bog is rising year by year and adjoins the area where the moving bog formerly existed.

On the occasion of the sale of the estate of Lord Kenmare to the tenants the bogs at Rathmore, Annagbeg and Gneeveguilla were vested in Trustees on behalf of the tenants and it is understood that the Trustees have relinquished control over the turbary area. The Land Commission have at present under consideration the advisability of making Regulations under which a defined area of turbary would be made available for each tenant entitled to turbary, and the question of any improvements by way of drainage or otherwise will be considered in connection with the proposed Regulations.
