Vol. 46 No. 1

Election of Ceann Comhairle.

Is mian liom a thairgsint go dtoghfaí an Teachta Proinnsias O Fathaigh mar Cheann Comhairle na Dála. Is dóigh liom go raibh gach aoinne a bhí annseo anuiridh sásta leis an slighe in ar chóimhlíon sé a chuid dualgaisí. Thug sé Comhthrom na Féinne do chách agus do riar sé obair na Dála go cneasta agus go h-éifeachtach. Dá bhrígh sin, is áil liom an moladh so do chur os comhair na Dála agus tá súil agam go n-aontófar leis.

I rise to second the nomination of Deputy Frank Fahy for the position of Ceann Comhairle of the Dáil. I do so because of the fact that during his occupancy of the Chair in the last Dáil Deputy Fahy distinguished himself by conspicuous ability and by diligence in the performance of his duties. His conduct while in the Chair was marked by a high sense of fair play and by a scrupulous regard for the interests and rights of each and every member of the House. His conduct in the Chair has distinguished him in so far as on every possible occasion he granted every reasonable latitude and extended to each and every member a fair opportunity of expressing his views. His conduct in the Chair did more. It did honour to himself and to the Dáil, and I know of no more worthy occupant to fill the Chair than Deputy Frank Fahy.

Question—"That Deputy Frank Fahy be elected and do now take the Chair of the Dáil as Ceann Comhairle"—put by the Clerk and agreed to unanimously.
Whereupon the Deputies present rose in their places and remained standing while the Ceann Comhairle proceeded to the Dais.
Standing beside the Chair, the Ceann Comhairle, addressing the Dáil, said:—
Táim fíor-bhuidheach den Dáil de bharr mé thoghadh arís mar Cheann Comhairle. Is mór an onóir liom é. Níl agam le rádh acht go ndeunfad mo dhíthcheall chun gach dualgas a bhaineas leis an oifig do chomhlíonadh mar ba cheart. Chuige sin, beidh mé ag braith ar an gcabhair is gnáthach le Teachtaí do thabhairt—agus do thugadar riamh—do'n Chathaoir.
I desire to thank Deputies for having elected me again to the office of Ceann Comhairle. I appreciate the great honour it is to be so selected. I have only to say that I shall do my utmost to carry out all the duties of the office worthily, and that I confidently rely on a continuance of the co-operation which Deputies have always given to the Chair.
