Vol. 59 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kilkenny Gárda Station.

asked the Minister for Justice whether he is aware that the existing Gárda station in Kilkenny City has been condemned by the medical officer of health as being unsuitable for its present purpose; whether it is a fact that proposals regarding the renovation of these premises are under consideration by his Department; and, if so, whether having regard to the cost of repairing and reconstructing the building, he will consider the advisability of providing a new building designed especially for the purpose of a Gárda station.

I am aware that the premises occupied by the Gárda Síochána in Kilkenny are very unsuitable, and I have urged on the Board of Works, who are responsible for the provision of barracks for the Gárda, the desirability of providing suitable accommodation as soon as possible. I have been informed by the Board that no suitable alternative premises are available and that as a suitable site has not yet been acquired some time must elapse before a new building can be provided. The Board state that they propose to carry out certain works in order to make the present premises as suitable as possible in the meantime.
