Vol. 60 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Enrolments in Infants' Classes.

asked the Minister for Education whether the number of children enrolled in the infants' classes in the national schools in Dublin City has been declining in the last six years; and, if so, whether he can assign any reason for the decline.

The number of children enrolled in the infant classes in the national schools in Dublin City on the 30th June, 1930, was less than the number enrolled on the same date in any year during the succeeding four years.

There was a considerable decrease in the past two years as compared with the figures for the three preceding years. This decrease may be attributed mainly to the increase in the number of promotions from infant classes to higher standards and also to the operation of the new rule which took effect from the 1st April, 1934. Under this rule the minimum age for the enrolment of children in national schools was raised from three to four years.
