Vol. 63 No. 19

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Recruitment of Labour at Miltown-malbay.

Mr. Hogan

(Clare) asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if reports have reached him as to the recruitment of labour on a water supply scheme at Miltownmalbay, County Clare, if he is aware that no rotation of work is in operation, although the work is in progress now for over three months; that people who have not any dependants are employed whilst others who have large and young families are left unemployed, and that in many cases the names are not procured from the employment exchange when workers are needed on the scheme, and if he will send an officer to investigate and report at once.

No reports other than the Deputy's letter of the 10th June last were received by me in regard to the recruitment of labour for this work. The work is being carried out by contract and the rotational system of employment does not apply. The latest return of men engaged on the work shows that the total number employed was recruited from the lists of men obtained from the local exchange. The matter has already been the subject of an investigation by an officer of the Department of Industry and Commerce, and it is understood that a communication in relation thereto has recently been addressed to the Deputy by that Department.

Mr. Hogan

Is the Minister aware that the area of employment is within a mile of Miltownmalbay where there are 40 families drawing the maximum unemployment assistance and that the area of employment given in the scheme is a sparsely populated rural area? Is that any consideration for the Minister?
