Vol. 65 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Central Sorting and Delivery Office.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether he is aware of the inadequacy and unsuitability of the premises at present used as the central sorting and delivery office in Dublin, whether he is aware of the serious inconveniences caused in the handling of mail traffic in the office, particularly at Christmas periods, and if he will state what steps he proposes to take to provide a satisfactory building for such purposes.

I am aware of the desirability of improving the central sorting office premises, but the scheme is a very large and complicated one and to prevent any possible interruption in the mail services must be dealt with in sections. The first section (in course of erection) will be completed in April or May next, and as soon as additional accommodation can be made available on the main site the remaining sections will be proceeded with. So far as can be foreseen at this stage the entire scheme will not be completed before 1941.

That is, eight years after your predecessor stated it would be started.

The Deputy has got a date from the new Minister. That is a revolution.
