Vol. 66 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Telephonic Facilities in County Waterford.

asked the Minister for Justice whether he is aware that the Gárda Síochána station at Rathgormack, County Waterford, is not provided with telephonic facilities, and if he will cause the defect to be remedied as soon as possible, as the nearest telephone office is about five miles away.

I am aware that a telephone service has not been provided at Rathgormack Gárda Station. It has been considered that, owing to the capital cost of installation and the annual rent which would be involved, an installation would not be justifiable. The matter will be reconsidered if circumstances alter so as to permit of installation at lower cost.

Does the Minister bear in mind the undertaking given on another occasion that, in so far as humanly possible, such installations would be made, even though there was no hope of their being economic, in the light of the amenity that would be provided for people living in the neighbourhood who found themselves in an emergency?

We have asked the Post Office to reconsider the present instance.
