Vol. 69 No. 19

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Town Tenants' Legislation.

(forMr. Heron) asked the Minister for Justice whether his attention had been called to the serious hardship inflicted on leaseholders in cities and urban districts where landlords refuse to renew an expiring lease except on condition the leaseholder agrees to an increase in rent often amounting to 200 or 300 per cent.; and, whether he is prepared to introduce proposals for legislation to amend the law so as to secure to the leaseholder the right to renew his lease on equitable terms.

asked the Minister for Justice whether the tribunal appointed to inquire into the question of rents and other conditions of letting in the case of certain classes of tenancies in cities and towns has completed its inquiry; whether the tribunal has presented a report to him, and whether it is intended to publish the report at a near date.

asked the Minister for Justice whether it is intended to introduce proposals for the purpose of amending the law relating to increase of rent and mortgage interest, and, if so, whether he can say when these proposals will be available and the form in which they will be submitted to the Dáil.

I propose to take questions Nos. 14, 19 and 20 together. The tribunal which is at present inquiring into certain aspects of the relations between landlords and tenants has not yet presented its report, and I am not prepared to introduce any proposals for legislation in the matter until I have received and considered that report.

Will the Minister say when it is likely the report will be received?

I hope it will be received shortly but, as the Deputy knows, I have no control over the commission.
