Vol. 75 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cavan Monastery.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state whether the Commissioners of Public Works have received repeated requests from Cavan Urban Council to take charge of and preserve the remains of the ancient Franciscan monastery in the town of Cavan; and, if so, whether the Commissioners propose to accede to the request.

The Commissioners of Public Works have received representations from the Cavan Urban District Council and from Deputies Smith and Sheridan, requesting them to take over and preserve as a national monument the structure within the graveyard referred to by the Deputy. This graveyard is vested in the council, and the Commissioners have no power under the National Monuments Act, 1930, to take over for preservation any monument so vested. The Cavan Urban District Council was advised to this effect in March, 1936.
