Vol. 76 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Voters' Lists.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health whether he is aware that at the recent revision of voters' lists for the County and City of Dublin the names of a substantial number of people were removed from the register on the ground that they were not citizens; and whether, inasmuch as such people are British subjects, and taxpayers, and residents in this State for a long time, and entitled to vote at local government elections, he will have the matter examined with a view to introducing legislation to enable such people to vote at parliamentary elections.

The answer to the first part of the question is in the negative. As regards the latter part, it would be inconsistent with the provisions of Article 16 2º of the Constitution to pass legislation which would enable a person, not being a citizen of Ireland, to be registered as a Dáil elector, and by virtue of such registration to vote at a Dáil election.
