Vol. 77 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Teachers in Industrial Schools.

asked the Minister for Education whether he is yet in a position to carry out the scheme referred to in the statement made in the House on the 13th March last to confer on teachers of primary subjects in industrial schools the status, emoluments and privileges of national teachers, and if not when he expects to be able to implement the promise made on that occasion.

I regret that I am not yet in a position to carry out the scheme referred to by the Deputy. The whole matter is under review in connection with the present financial position, and I am not yet able to indicate what course of action the Government may adopt.

Do I understand from the Minister that the promise made by his penultimate predecessor is in abeyance?

I say that the whole matter is being examined into.

But the promise made is partially withdrawn?

The promise to the extent of any commitments or pledges given and the present financial situation will be dealt with at the same time.

Is the promise given withdrawn?

I have not said that.
