Vol. 78 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fertiliser Deposit in North Clare.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he has knowledge of a rich deposit of fertilisers found in North Clare some time ago; and, if so, if in view of the expected increase in tillage coupled with the scarcity of artificial manures, and also the much-needed employment given by the working and production of fertilisers, he will see that the North Clare deposits will be availed of at the earliest opportunity.

I am aware of the existence of deposits of phosphate rock in County Clare. I understand that the lessees of the deposits are at present engaged in negotiations with a view to the development and utilisation of the mineral. This is, of course, primarily a matter for private enterprise, but my Department is prepared to give any assistance within the limits of its powers.
