Vol. 82 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Discontinuance of Roads (Rural) Schemes.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that all roads (rural) schemes have been discontinued as from March 29th, if he will state the reason for their discontinuance and whether, in view of the great hardship inflicted on a large body of workers who depended on these schemes for their livelihood, he will indicate what alternative schemes for providing employment for such men he is prepared to announce.

Roads (rural) schemes, in common with other types of employment schemes in rural areas, are designed for the relief of unemployment during the period from November to March when the peak figure of unemployment is reached. Grants for the schemes are approved to the local authorities on the express condition that the works are to be started and proceeded with in such a way as to be completed within the financial year. A further determining factor in this matter is the necessity of avoiding possible interference with spring work on farms through the continuance in operation of large-scale employment schemes in rural areas after the 31st March. It is hoped shortly to make an announcement which will much improve the position in the rural areas.

Could the Parliamentary Secretary say whether that announcement will include a re-vote of the unexpended balance on schemes of this kind on 31st March?

It might include something very much better.
