Vol. 83 No. 10

Committee on Finance. - Vote 26—Universities and Colleges.

I move:—

Go ndeontar suim ná raghaidh thar £84,430 chun slánuithe na suime is gá chun íoctha an Mhuirir a thiocfaidh chun bheith iníoctha i rith na bliana dar críoch an 31adh lá de Mhárta, 1942, chun Deontaisí d'Ollscoileanna agus do Choláistí (8 Edw. 7, c. 38; Uimh. 42 de 1923; Uimh. 32 de 1926; Uimh. 35 de 1929; agus Uimh. 27 de 1934), le n-a n-áirmhítear Deontaisí áirithe i gCabhair.

That a sum not exceeding £84,430 be granted to complete the sum necessary to defray the Charge which will come in course of payment during the year ending the 31st day of March, 1942, for Grants to Universities and Colleges (8 Edw. 7, c. 38; No. 42 of 1923; No. 32 of 1926; No. 35 of 1929; and No. 27 of 1934), including certain Grants-in-Aid.

There is a decrease of £1,000 on this Vote, due to the discontinuance of the grant for Research Professorship in Celtic languages at University College, following the creating of a similar post in the Institute of Advanced Studies.

When discussing the Bill for Advanced Studies, I tried to find out from the Taoiseach what was going to happen at University College. It was deduced that University College was going to lose some of its Irish Professors and it was argued that that was going to be a very serious blemish on University College, as soon as the Institute for Advanced Studies had been set up, as University College would lose Professor O'Rahilly and Professor Bergin. Can we get any information as to what is going to happen at University College, with a view to making up the losses it has undoubtedly suffered as a result of the departure of the two professors?

I think that question would not arise on this Vote which is one merely accounting for certain moneys. The policy in relation to the University would certainly come under the Education Vote. The Deputy may have the consolation of knowing that the fact that the point has been raised will bring it before those whose business it is to consider it.

The Parliamentary Secretary has no idea what consolation that is to me.

Vote agreed to.
