Vol. 85 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bounty on Wheat.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will grant a reasonable bounty per acre—not to extend beyond a maximum of two acres per holding—for wheat grown (a) in the congested districts, (b) on lands reclaimed where the valuation per head of the population is small.

I am not prepared to arrange for the granting of a bounty for the growing of wheat, as suggested. The attention of the Deputy is directed to the special emergency schemes operated by this Department. Under the seeds distribution scheme a quantity of about 350 tons of seed wheat is being distributed this season at reduced rates to small holders in congested districts. In connection with the farm improvements scheme grants equivalent to half the approved estimated cost of the labour involved may be made in respect of land reclaimed under the conditions of the scheme.
