Vol. 86 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Production of Turf.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state what steps he has taken in consultation with county surveyors or with the local authorities to secure the production in each of the turf areas of the maximum quantity of turf during the present season.

The action taken is, in general, similar to last year. In a few cases there have been modifications to meet temporarily or otherwise new conditions.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary indicate what steps he proposes to take to assist county councils that have a large amount of turf that they can still find no market for?

That is certainly a separate question.

It is a different matter.

The Parliamentary Secretary intimated last year that there would be increased production of national turf this year. If that is to take place again this year will he say, arising out of the point put by Deputy Murphy, what steps are to be taken to enable the turf producing areas to export the turf which they have and for which they cannot get a market locally? That turf is likely seriously to deteriorate unless some steps are taken to have it marketed.

Neither the marketing nor the present condition of turf is a matter arising from this question.

These are all questions which may be more properly raised on the Estimate.

Question No. 6.

Questions Nos. 6, 7, 8 and 15 deal with the matter of wages, and I propose to answer the four of them before dealing with any supplementaries that may arise.
