Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Turf Production.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state in respect of the production by the Turf Development Board of turf briquettes at Lullymore bog: (a) the quantity of turf dust produced; (b) the actual quantity in tons of briquettes produced; (c) the quantity of fuel oil used in each of the years 1939, 1940 and 1941, and (d) the estimated or actual wastage of briquettes in store.

The detailed information asked for is not available; the total quantity of briquettes manufactured this year to date is about 12,000 tons.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state in respect of the men employed by the Turf Development Board and housed by them in camps or other buildings: (a) the number of men so employed and housed; (b) the number of such camps, their location and the number of men housed in each, and (c) the proportion of such men actually employed on the production of turf as distinguished from such development work as drainage, road-making, etc.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state in respect of the turf production scheme of hand-won turf undertaken by the Turf Development Board, distinguishing between (a) men employed in the actual production of turf; (b) men employed in other ancillary work; (c) the average number of men employed each week subsequent to April 1st, 1942; (d) the total number of men now employed; and, further, if he will state (e) the average quantity in tons on the basis of 30 per cent. moisture content of turf produced during each week subsequent to April 1st; (f) the average number of men it is anticipated will be employed each week between June 1st and the end of the present season, and (g) the average quantity of turf in tons on the basis of 30 per cent. moisture content it is anticipated will be produced each week until the end of the season, and the total quantity which will be produced during the season.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state in tons, on the basis of 30 per cent. moisture content, the total production and the average weekly production this season of machine-won turf in each bog area worked by the Turf Development Board.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the average number of men employed by the Turf Development Board in the production of turf briquettes at Lullymore bog.

The total number of men employed at present in the production of turf briquettes at Lullymore is 180.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state (a) the weekly average number of men he anticipates will be employed between June 1st and the end of the turf season by the several county surveyors on (1) actual production of turf and (2) work ancillary to the production of turf; (b) the total quantity in tons of turf on the basis of 30 per cent. moisture content he anticipates will be produced by the several county surveyors during the 1942 season.

The numbers of men to be employed as well as the quantity of turf to be produced in the period mentioned will be affected by various factors such as weather conditions and it is not intended to make, for publication, such estimates at present. Statistics of turf production are not compiled on the basis set out.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the total sum paid in royalties by each county surveyor in respect of the turf production scheme carried out by him in 1941, and the total sum paid in royalties by all county surveyors in respect of 1941 schemes.

The information asked for forms part of an inquiry which is in course of being made and the result of which is not yet available.

asked the Minister for Finance if he can state the extent to which private persons are engaged in the production of turf in each county, the average number of men employed in this enterprise each week, and the anticipated yield therefrom in good class saleable turf.

The particulars requested by the Deputy are not available.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state in tons on the basis of 30 per cent. moisture content (a) the total quantity, and (b) the average quantity for each week subsequent to April 1st, 1942, of turf produced by each county surveyor, and the total quantity produced by all county surveyors during the present season down to the latest date for which the information is available.

No statistics or estimates have been made on the basis stated.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state in respect of the turf production scheme now being carried out by the several county surveyors, distinguishing in each case between (a) the men actually engaged in turf production, and (b) the men engaged in drainage and other development work; (1) the average number of men employed by each county surveyor in each week subsequent to April 1st, 1942; and (2) the total number of men employed by each county surveyor on June 13th or on the latest date for which the information is available.

The best information available in relation to these matters will be given in the statement on the Vote.
