Vol. 88 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Alleviation of Unemployment.

Mr. Byrne

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state what measures will be introduced to alleviate unemployment during the coming winter.

Special provision of £750,000 has been made by the Oireachtas in Vote 67 for schemes of work for the unemployed, and the greater portion of the amount available from the Vote will be expended during the coming winter.

In addition, a substantial part of the sum provided in Vote 73 for emergency schemes will be expended during the winter on farm improvement schemes and on works connected with the turf production programme.

Mr. Byrne

Is it in the Minister's power to make a grant in order to help in some way men who are going to England for employment, but who cannot get coupons for boots and shoes when they arrive in England?

That is an entirely different question. If the Deputy chooses he can put down a question.

Mr. Byrne

These men are leaving this country.
