Vol. 92 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Carrick-on-Suir Rent Increases.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he is aware that a dispute exists between the Carrick-on-Suir Urban District Council tenants and that council over the county manager's intention to increase the rents, and if he will state whether he has received any communication from the Town Clerk of Carrick-on-Suir on the matter; and whether, having regard to the fact that such increases will be a great hardship on these tenants at the present time, he will advise the county manager to adjourn any questions of increases in the rent of council's houses until after the emergency.

I am aware that a number of tenants of houses provided by the Carrick-on-Suir Urban District Council withheld payment of rent owing to increases in their weekly rent, due to the fact that in pursuance of the Local Government (Rates on Small Dwellings) Act, 1928, they were called upon to meet the recent increase in rates.

Is the Minister aware that a stabilised rent of 4/- per week was fixed on these houses, and that since then, under the Local Government (Rates on Small Dwellings) Act, rates have been charged on the houses? There were no rates struck at the time that the rent was fixed.

That would seem to be the case.

I wish the Minister would inquire into the matter.
