Vol. 92 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fishing Facilities in County Kerry.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that the sea fishermen of the Rineen-Lohar district have neither pier nor slip accommodation by which they can launch and beach their boats with safety; that the pier which formerly existed was washed away some years ago by the sea; that up to then there were upwards of 50 men in this area engaged in sea fishing; that engineers. have paid several visits to the place with no practical results; and whether he will take immediate steps to give these poor fishermen the facilities which they seek.

I am advibed that the existing landing slip at Rineen, Waterville, County Kerry, is in bad repair, but that owing to the nature of the coastline in the area it would not be possible to provide at reasonable cost a structure whose stability could be guaranteed. It is proposed to have a further inspection carried out as soon as possible to ascertain whether it would be practicable to provide landing facilities which, although not of a permanent nature, might be expected to last for a period of years.

Can the Parliamentary Secretary state at what date it is expected that the inspection will be carried out?

I cannot give any assurance on that matter, but it will not be long.
