Vol. 96 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kilkenny Corporation.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will state whether it is intended to restore the Corporation of Kilkenny and to hold local elections for that purpose in the present year.

I would refer the Deputy to the reply I gave to a question of the 7th ultimo, in which I stated that the election of members of Kilkenny Borough Council is due to be held this year.

Is the Minister in a position to say when?

Seeing that the Government Party themselves know when the election is going to be held, would they mind telling members of the other Parties?

I cannot say when, for the simple reason that the Act provides that the election be held between the 23rd June and the 1st July, at the option of the local authority.

It is not proposed to interfere with the Act?

Seeing that Kildare is such an important place, might I ask the Minister to consider giving it a mayor and corporation?

And make the Deputy the mayor—or the nightmare, which?

No, the Deputy.
