Vol. 100 No. 18

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin-Wexford Train Service.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that the passenger train service between Dublin and Wexford is inadequate for the needs of the travelling public; that the fact that there is only one train each way in the day causes considerable dissatisfaction and inconvenience; and if he will direct Córas Iompair Éireann to arrange for a daily service of at least two passenger trains in each direction, one in the morning and one in the evening, on this important line.

The restriction of rail passenger services to one train each way daily is not confined to the Dublin-Wexford route but is common throughout the country. The possibility of increasing railway services is being examined.

Is the Minister aware that a large number of people travel between Wexford and Dublin and that the buses do not always suit them? On last Monday 20 passengers for the bus to Wexford had no alternative but to stay in Dublin for the night. As many of these people were coming from hospitals they had no money in their pockets to pay for accommodation. Could the Minister see his way to have an evening train service provided?

As I informed the Deputy, the possibility of increasing the railway services is being examined.
