Vol. 102 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Custom House Documents.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if it is a fact that the Custom House was illegally entered during the night within the past two weeks; that a number of files and documents were interfered with and some of them stolen; whether he will state if an incident of this kind took place, and, if so, whether he will furnish details of the documents and other property stolen from the Custom House, and indicate what steps have been taken to secure the apprehension of the criminals.

The Custom House was entered through a basement window on Sunday evening, the 23rd June, 1946, between the hours of 7 and 10 p.m. The matter was reported to my Department on the following morning and the Gárdaí at Store Street Station were immediately notified. Apart from the theft of some fountain pens (the private property of officials) and pencils, and the disturbing of some files and papers, no documents or files were stolen. The Gárdaí have apprehended two youths and have recovered some of the pens stolen.

It is a pity they did not steal the Minister.
