Vol. 102 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Clara (Offaly) Housing Scheme.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will request immediate improvements be carried out to the housing scheme at Clara, Offaly; if he will cause inquiries to be made as to the bad state of repair of the road running through the scheme, and if he will have improvements carried out on this road.

I would refer the Deputy to my reply of the 28th February last in regard to this matter. On the 18th May the county manager reported that the fencing of the plots attached to the houses was proceeding satisfactorily and it was expected that the work would be completed within a few weeks. I understand that the county engineer has been instructed by the county manager to prepare a scheme for the provision of a dumping ground and the establishment of a regular scavenging system for the town of Clara. I also understand that the repair to the roadway had to be deferred owing to the shortage of tar but is expected to be undertaken in September.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary say whether an inspector from his Department paid a visit to Clara and inspected the scheme? Will he say if he has been furnished with the report of the inspector and if that report has been furnished to the county manager; and would he consider the advisability of circulating a copy to the Deputies for the constituency?

I have no information as to whether an inspector has been to Clara since the date the question was asked.

Surely, the Parliamentary Secretary would be aware of a visit made by a Departmental inspectortor. Was such a visit made on the instructions of the Minister; if so, surely a report has been rendered to the Minister?

Will the Minister undertake to comply with the request of Deputy Davin and furnish to the Deputies concerned a copy of the inspector's reports?

I think the whole question of the desirability of furnishing Deputies with copies of the engineer's report and a general statement in relation to the condition of these houses at Clara was discussed some time ago and I have nothing further to add.

An inspector visited the scheme—is that not so?
