Vol. 106 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Farm Machinery.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that there is a general shortage of mowing machines, potato diggers, hay-carts and horse-drawn spraying machines; and whether, in view of the special importance of these implements for agricultural operations this year, he will state what steps have been taken to have the supply of such machines in Wexford substantially increased.

I am aware of the importance of securing an increase in the home output of agricultural machinery to meet the requirements of the agricultural community, but the Deputy must realise that, under prevailing conditions, any efforts in this direction are dependent on the availability of adequate supplies of foundry coke for the agricultural machinery manufacturers. Supplies of suitable coke are not available from customary sources and everything possible is being done to secure supplies from other sources.

There are no spare parts available for mowing machines, spraying machines, ploughs, etc. What is the farmer to do when the spare parts he has in hands are exhausted? Is he to down tools?
