Vol. 111 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Youghal Harbour Facilities.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if, in view of the urgent need for facilities at Youghal Harbour and the inability of the local authorities in the area served by the harbour to contribute to the cost of providing these facilities by reason of the present high rates, he will consider making a grant equal to the total cost of providing the facilities.

The Youghal Harbour Commissioners have been asked whether any contribution would be forthcoming from local sources for the scheme they have put forward for harbour improvements. On receipt of a reply their application will be examined.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that Youghal Harbour Commissioners are in no position whatever to offer any financial contribution? They have no security to offer to any banks and have no assets. In these circumstances will the Minister consider making a grant to the harbour authorities?

May I say that last week, in reply to a question by Deputy Keane, I stated to the Minister who was present that we were not in a position to contribute anything, as Youghal Harbour Commissioners were in debt to the extent of £300? I do not see any reason why the same question should be brought forward twice within a week.

I want a reply from the Minister as to whether he is prepared to give a contribution in the circumstances which I have mentioned.

I happen to be chairman of the harbour commissioners, so I know the position.

No officials were paid since 1943.

Even the chairman of the harbour commissioners may not make a statement in the guise of a question. Deputies should reserve these exchanges of courtesies for Cork.

I hope to bring him back to Youghal.
