Vol. 112 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Drainage of Mayo Rivers.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he will issue instructions immediately to the Office of Public Works to complete the drainage of the Mullagh river, in view of the fact that this river has flooded large tracts of land on the Mullagh/Cuilleen and Durless areas, causing very serious loss to the small farmers in the districts concerned.

The work involved is such that it could not be carried out economically during the winter months and it is not, therefore, suitable as a minor employment scheme, as these schemes are carried out only in the winter when the Employment Period Orders are not in force. The proposal will be considered on its merits for execution during the summer, if the interested parties submit it under the rural improvements scheme, by the terms of which the beneficiaries are required to make a contribution of one quarter of the cost of the work.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state whether it is the intention of his Department to make a complete survey of the River Moy, its tributaries and the lands adjoining; further, if he will state if it is proposed to undertake this survey in the immediate future so that an adequate scheme of drainage may be decided on and put into operation.

It is the intention to make a complete survey of the Moy catchment for the purpose of formulating a comprehensive drainage scheme pursuant to the Arterial Drainage Act, 1945. I cannot say when this survey will commence.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state whether it is the intention of his Department to make a complete survey of the River Clare, its tributaries and the adjoining land with a view to putting into effect a complete drainage scheme for the area.

The Clare River, its tributaries and the adjoining lands are in the Corrib catchment area, which is at present being surveyed for the purpose of preparing a comprehensive drainage scheme pursuant to the Arterial Drainage Act, 1945.
