Vol. 114 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mayo Estates Acquisition.

asked the Minister for Lands if he can now state when the Land Commission intend to acquire the Ashford lands at Cong, County Mayo, for the purpose of distribution.

In October, 1948, I requested the Land Commission to deal with the least possible delay with the question of the relief of congestion in the Cong area of which the Ashford lands form a part. Progress has been very satisfactory to date.

asked the Minister for Lands whether he is aware of the extreme congestion and poverty which exists in the Bohola-Ballyvary district, County Mayo; and, if so, whether he will state if the Land Commission intend to acquire the large portion of land held by ranchers in this area for the purpose of division, amongst small-holders; whether inspectors have reported on land in this area with a view to acquisition; and, if so, whether he will name the lands reported on.

I am aware of conditions in the area referred to and I have taken the necessary steps to ensure that no opportunity will be missed of relieving these conditions by the division of any suitable lands that can be acquired. It would be contrary to the usual practice to supply a list of estates or holdings the subject of inquiries with a view to acquisition.
