Vol. 117 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Road Costs.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware that local rates are collected to meet the cost of road making and maintenance notwithstanding the fact that such roads are used mainly by persons who are not ratepayers; and, if so, whether he will now take steps, if necessary by the introduction of proposals for legislation, to ensure that all road expenses will be defrayed from the Central Fund.

Local Authorities are not required to finance wholly out of rates the works necessary to carry out their statutory duties in regard to the maintenance and construction of roads. They do in fact receive very considerable financial assistance from central funds towards the cost of these works. It is not proposed to introduce legislation on the lines suggested.

This is the cost that the Minister cut down.
