Vol. 117 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mayo Lands.

asked the Minister for Lands whether he is aware that there are a number of landholders living in the townlands of Killeenreavagh and Gortduff (Ballyglass, Scardaune, County Mayo), whose land valuation is still under £10; and if he will state what is the intention of the Land Commission regarding these people.

asked the Minister for Lands whether he is aware that in a large area consisting of the townlands of Kilvine, Boleyboy, Falaherin, Kilnock, etc., considerable land resettlement and rearrangement remains to be done; and if he will state when the Land Commission intend to start this work.

asked the Minister for Lands what provision is being made to relieve the congestion and rundale system which still exists in the townland of Drumganagh, Manulla, Castlebar, County Mayo.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that considerable congestion exists in the townlands of Boleyard, Muckroe and surrounding townlands and if he will state what is being done to relieve this congestion.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that a considerable number of small farmers residing in the townland of Coolmakeen, Claremorris, County Mayo, have holdings of land under £10 valuation and to state if it is possible for the Land Commission to provide economic holdings for them.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle I propose to take questions Nos. 4, 9, 11, 12 and 13 together.

The relief of congestion and rearrangement of holdings is a major problem and must of necessity depend on the extent to which land can be made available by acquisition and resumption of holdings within the congested districts coupled with migration.

The acquisition and resumption of lands is a slow process but the reopening of activities after the emergency is now having effect and I am hopeful that it will be possible by next spring to complete rearrangement schemes for most of the townlands referred to by the Deputy—all of which I know are badly in need of relief. Of course, the success of each rearrangement scheme will depend largely on the co-operation of the tenants concerned.

asked the Minister for Lands what progress, if any, has been made to acquire portion of the large farm of Mr. Joseph Hession, Roos, Hollymount, County Mayo, for the relief of congestion.

It is too early yet to indicate what the result will be in this case.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state what is now the position regarding the acquisition of the Hyland estate, at Togher, Hollymount, County Mayo.

This case is well advanced.
