Vol. 118 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - North Cork Train Services.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that the train service from Millstreet, Rathcoole, Banteer and Lombardstown is most unsatisfactory in so far as the first train from these stations each day is not due in Cork City until 1.55 p.m.; and, if so, whether he will make representations to Córas Iompair Eireann to restore the service which existed some years ago on that line whereby a train from those stations connected each morning with the train which leaves Mallow for Cork at 10.35 a.m.

I have made inquiries from Córas Iompair Eireann in this matter. I am informed that there are three passenger trains in each direction on week-days between the places in question and Cork and that these are quite adequate to cater for the traffic offering. In these circumstances I would not feel justified in asking the company to provide a further service.

Passengers travelling to Cork on the train arriving at 1.55 p.m. can make a stay of four hours on four days of the week and of seven hours on the other two days, and return home the same night. I have asked the company to examine the position further to see whether a change could be made in the time table so as to give an earlier connection for passengers who wish to travel in the morning such as that which was available before the war.
