Vol. 118 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tralee Railwaymen's Domicile.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that 20 drivers and firemen employed by Córas Iompair Éireann are compelled to reside in Cork whilst their wives and families reside in Tralee; and, if so, whether he will take steps to have the position examined with a view to its adjustment for the mutual benefit of Córas Iompair Éireann and the men concerned.

In accordance with the provisions of Section 55 of the Railways Act, 1924, which was continued in force by Section 56 of the Transport Act, 1944, the rates of pay, hours of duty and other conditions of service of railway employees are regulated in accordance with agreements made between the trade unions representative of such employees and the railway companies.

I have made inquiries from Córas Iompair Éireann and I am informed that the situation to which the Deputy refers is the result of the promotion and transfer arrangements made in accordance with the scheme agreed between the company and the railway unions. This is a matter in which I have no function.

Would it not be possible for the Parliamentary Secretary to arrange that a deputation from the men concerned be received with a view to redressing their grievances in this matter?

The Parliamentary Secretary says that the Minister has no function in this matter.

If the men's union think they have a grievance in the matter it should be taken up with the company.
