asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state the basis on which grants are made from the Road Fund to local authorities.
Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Road Fund Grants.
The amount which can be made available for grants to local authorities from the Road Fund in any year is determined by reference to the estimated income of the fund for that year after making provision for prior charges on the fund and commitments already entered into which have to be met in that year. The sum available is then applied to road works proposed by the general road authorities and approved by the Minister for Local Government. For 1950-51 the grants for the upkeep of main roads will be on the basis of 40 per cent. of the total amounts included in the county councils' estimates for this purpose. Special full cost improvement grants will be allocated on a mileage basis for main and county roads, amounting in the case of main roads to £600,000 and in the case of county roads to £1,200,000. The question of a grant for county borough councils is being considered.
asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state the amount in grants received by Dublin Corporation from the Road Fund in the years 1946, 1947, 1948 and 1949 and what allocation it is proposed to make for 1950.
The following grants from the Road Fund were allocated to the Dublin Corporation: in the year 1946/47, £50,000; 1947/48, £100,000; 1948/49, nil; 1949/50, nil.
For various reason works under the £50,000 allocation are only now being completed. Works to the value of approximately £80,000 have been approved for execution under the allocation of £100,000 and proposals to absorb part of the balance are at present before the Department.
The question of an allocation for 1950/51 is being considered.
asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state the total amount of grants paid to each county council and county borough council for the purpose of road restoration, improvement and repair for each of the three years ended 31st March, 1947, 1948 and 1949.
With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle I propose to circulate the information in the form of tabular statements in the Official Report.
