Vol. 119 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin City Housing.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state, with respect to Dublin Corporation houses, the total number (a) erected in 1949; (b) handed over for occupation in 1949, and (c) not allocated on 31st December, 1949, and with respect to houses built by private enterprise in the Dublin Corporation area the number (a) built in 1949, and (b) built in 1949 but not occupied on 31st December, 1949.

The particulars in regard to corporation houses are as follows: (a) 1,436 dwellings; (b) 1,170 dwellings; (c) 311 dwellings. During 1949 housing grants were fully paid in respect of 357 completed houses in the Dublin Corporation area which had been built by private enterprise and were occupied. I have no information regarding the number of non-grant houses built in that period nor of houses built but not occupied during 1949.

Is the Minister in a position to give the House any indication when he hopes to have the housing situation in Dublin City relieved in view of the present rate of building? It was recently stated that 25,000 families are waiting for houses and that houses are being built at the rate of slightly over 1,000 a year.

The Deputy is in equally as good a position to answer that question as the Minister. We are doing everything possible to meet demands for houses.
