Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Appointment of Sub-Postmasters.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will state the name of the person recently appointed as sub-postmaster of the sub-post office situated at Gurtymadden, Ballinasloe, County Galway, and whether it is correct that this appointee is in receipt of a pension for military services rendered against the people of Ireland.

Mrs. Annie Curley is being appointed as sub-postmistress at Gurtymadden She is not, so far as I am aware, in receipt of a pension of any kind.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will state the procedure adopted by his Department for the filling of casual vacancies for the position of sub-postmaster.

Vacancies for sub-postmasters are filled either by transfer or by advertisement. In the first case, the sub-office is transferred to an immediate relative of the out-going or deceased sub-postmaster, subject to the fulfilment of certain conditions. In the second case, applications for the vacant position are invited locally by advertisement, and the most suitable candidate, having regard to personal character and qualifications, location of premises, and accommodation offered, is appointed.
