Vol. 121 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Printed Materials.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that quantities of printed cardboard and printed labels are imported by Irish distributors and manufacturers; and, if so, whether he will take steps to ensure that wrappers, labels and containers used in this country are printed here.

I am aware of the facts as stated in the first part of the question. All of these goods, however, are liable to payment of customs duties on importation, and licences are not given to enable them to be imported free of duty. No representations have been made to me by the producers of these goods in this country that the rates of import duties on these articles are insufficient adequately to protect home interests.

Will the Minister agree that it would be possible to supply the home market from home produce?

All I am aware of is that there is a very full measure of protection. I am also aware of the fact, as the Deputy I am sure must be, that the printing industry is engaged to its absolute maximum capacity.
