Vol. 121 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Portlaw Housing Scheme.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware that in the Portlaw housing scheme doors made from Swedish timber are being used, although doors made from native timber are available; and, if so, if he will state why this is so.

I understand from the local authority that some doors made from Swedish timber were ordered owing to difficulty in obtaining suitable native timber doors. The position has since improved and steps are being taken to have only doors of native timber purchased for the remainder of the scheme.

Is the Minister aware that a first-class firm capable of making Irish doors were eager and anxious to get the contract concerned and, notwithstanding that, the doors were imported from Sweden? They are now swinging to and fro to the tune of Come Back to Erin.
